I didn’t post yesterday because I was really busy with revision so it’s a double post today.
Monday:
- We cut out cards which when ordered correctly made a story as to how icebergs are formed:
Today
- We looked at which indicators in Antartica’s environment to find out to what extent global warming is happening:
Such as Thicker ice sheets, thinner ice sheets, quicker ice streams, slower ice streams, ice shelves – thinner, shrink, disintegrates.
2. We moved on to look at ice wedge formations and in turn how this leads to a polygon like landscape.
Formation of Ice Wedges:
- Intense cold causes the ground to contract which creates cracks in the landscape.
- The active layer melts above 0oc and this moisture sinks into the cracks, when it reaches the permafrost level t freezes forming an ice wedge.
- The Ice wedge stays in the permafrost layer until the temperature gets below 0oc. When the active and permafrosts freeze again the ice wedge will break and the crack widen with ice on either side.
- The remaining space will fill with water again in the summer months again freezing as it reaches the permafrost.
- The crack will become wider year by year the layer of ice being less than 10mm.
3. We listened to an extract from Michael Palin’s ‘pole to pole’ we wrote down notes into various headings on a sheet.
I think I’m about caught up from Berlin now, a good lesson, it was cool to learn about another physical process.
Everybody Please Comment!!!
