We started the lesson by looking at tourist impact on Antarctica. We filled in a sheet to show solutions to problems of tourist impact. Problems such as litter polluting the environment which means you have to take all waste back with you to recycle. Boats must be smallish and hulls strengthened so icebergs so not sink the boat polluting the ocean. You must not get to close to ‘native’ animals or you will interfere with breeding and make the animal feel uncomfortable, if you visit you will be educated about all these issues before you leave.
We then moved on to What Makes Antarctica An Extreme Environment? An A* answer will use vital statistics, data, figures and facts. We drew a mind map to illustrate this including things such as:
- Antarctica’s is very chilly around -80Oc in winter!
- Antarctica is the windiest continent with speeds up to 200mph! Hold onto your hat!
- Antarctica is the highest continent at an average of 3000m above sea level!
- Antarctica is a DESERT yes, because it is so dry, it only has 2″ of water equivalent precipitation a year!
We finished by watching Michael’s Presentation on Dry Valleys Presentation, Excellent!
